The Regional Municipality of the North Pole - Reindeer Pre-flight Training Centre is located at Fuzzy Foot Farm relocated further north in June of 2009. The new site, now known as the Highpoint Site, is immediately north of the Dundalk lights on Highway 10. This places the centre on the northern boundary of the Melancthon EcoPower Centre (formerly Melancthon I & II Wind Generation Farm) operated by Canadian Hydro Developers. It is currently the largest operational wind farm in Canada with enough generation to service 77,000 homes.
Dundalk, Ontario is a small farming community within the Township of Southgate and is known as the Highest Point of populated land in the province. Dundalk is located at the extreme southern limit of Grey County but the farm actually is located in Melancthon Township, County of Dufferin. It is also home of the Canadian Open Square and Step dance competition held annually in June. This is one of the only remaining competitions of its kind in North America.
The wind farm creates a quiet setting for the training of young flyers but also brings strict flight restrictions due to the close proximity of the turbines. Inbound flights approaching from south of the Training Centre must use extreme caution on approach and are advised to descend to 20 feet AGL at the outer marker for the run into the farm. Until the wind farm surges again, all other compass points are unobstructed at this time. We maintain a clear roof policy on the main barn which is oriented east to west. The house roof is not currently certified for landings. A large open field is also available for larger flights and less experienced animals immediately east of the main barn. Cross pattern North to South is available using the OFSC trails that intersect the property. Daytime flights are not encouraged. Inbound reindeer declaring emergencies should contact the Centre Duty Officer for instructions. Bed & Bale facilities should be available by February 2010 for lay ups, please contact us for information.
PLEASE NOTE; The Centre is closed to general flights from December 23 through Jan 6th annually due to a higher than usual traffic pattern. Priorty sorties only may clear through the centre at this time.
FUZZY FOOT FARM houses a variety of animals including horses, ponies, donkeys, camels, and some exotic creatures as well. They are available along with some of the reindeer throughout the year for movies, television and media as well as personal appearances. Santa frequents the farm as well and can often be seen with the reindeer. The farm is NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC but many of the animals can be seen from the road.
Shelburne Jack, the official mascot of the former Festivals Shelburne, resides at the farm. Jackie is a adolescent male Red Kangaroo that has become a local celebrity to many of the inhabitants of "Headwaters Country". He is often available for personal appearances for a modest fee.
Fuzzy Foot Farm is not a charitable organization nor does it hold a "Not for Profit" status. We have many animals here that have come out of exceptional or difficult situations but we are not a rescue. We do not take in found animals or those in distress in general but can assist those needing these services in locating the correct authorities. We know the history and background of the animals that we are keeping and where possible, keep documentation for the animals.
Early in 2010, Fuzzy Foot Farm, in partnership with the Regional Municipality of the North Pole, will introduce an “Adopt a Reindeer” program as a means to support the farm and its inhabitants. This will be extended to the other exotics that reside here shortly afterward. Branded merchandise will also begin to appear in 2010 with the introduction of Birthday parties, Wagon and sleigh rides and other celebration opportunities to follow.
We have been offered donations in the past and have never accepted them but economics make it impossible to continue to refuse this generosity. We do not solicit donations but those who wish to offer help can do so in the form of materials in preference to cash where possible. Hay, Straw, Shavings, Children's play and climbing toys, old clean blankets, and gift certificates for the local feed mill will assist with the upkeep of the animals. Fencing and building materials are always required for update and repair of penning and improving quarters. We gratefully accept any assistance offered.
We have a skilled farrier on the farm. Our eldest son, Sean, is a graduate of the Oklahoma School of Horseshoeing, one of the best courses available today. He is experienced but is still building a book of clients. He may be what you are looking for to service the horses and donkeys in your barn!
MARKSMANSHIP TECHNICAL SERVICES is operated by Capt. Anthony Porter. He is one of four Officers in Central Ontario tasked with the repair and Maintenance of the Air Rifles used in training for over 100 Cadet Corps and Squadrons. Military users may request services through the Detachment at Toronto and non military users may obtain service on the farm. Marksmanship Technical Services is currently limited in the services that it can provide to non military users.
